is killing it right now. The best mix of interviews and op-ed's in the game right now. I need to add that getting twice weekly mixes from people as diverse as MJ Cole, Scratch DVA and The XX doesn't hurt.
The best thing that the site offers is the The Essential series this offers up some of the best work of a chosen artist. It really showed me why people love wiley. I was in the states during Grime' rise during the early 00's and having an opportunity to go back and listen to his tracks and maybe more importantly his beats made me a fan.
This week they have Danja the unsung music producer at the moment. As a music geek i may have to big up producers more since they are the true genius behind the ever increasing vapid popstars. Ones that have no clue about the music.

State of the union part 2

The blog is being shut down for the immediate future. My laptop broke down. And with it so goes five years worth of music. And all my journalism work. It's a shame as the spinners would say but I guess it's good in the long run.

I have been a little sidetracked in the past couple of months and began to neglect the readers of this blog. I began to rely on videos and not write as much as before. Now that I am sans comp it means that they will be more writing about the London experience and my reactions to music.

In the mean time I suggest you stick to the Twitter page that is where you will be more up to date with the coming and goings of the blog.

Alex Turner: “Paul Epworth is winning at life.” Alex Turner is a man dating Alexa Chung and a star in two successful bands in recent times he is a man I can trust.

The thing is that the man formerly known as Phones is branching out into a stellar producer. First he turned skiffleball Elvis impersonator ponce Jack Penate into an accomplished singer songwriter with echoes of early 90’s tribal dance and African drums. Then he constantly manages to pull out the best of one of my favourite bands, Friendly Fires.

Kiss of Life is them eschewing their addictive brand of new disco funk. Instead the track is samba carnival drumming with drops that’ll make you scream for more. It might be my favourite track by the St Albans band that’s including Paris (Ldnnez rule number 54: almost all songs about Paris are amazing.)

Major Lazer Monday

It’s Major Lazer Monday. I wish all days could be like this filled with music made from a commando with a lazer on one of his arms. Either way here are two mixes, one is the essential mix and the other from the Mishka mix series. I guessing that since both of them are very busy and that Diplo pulled double duty with his pitchfork and essential mix (both came out within two weeks of each other) I assume the mixes are very similar.

With that said, Major Lazer produced one of the albums of the summer. An album that is rich and diverse with huge pop songs and jarring political anthems. An album that really came out of nowhere on this musical landscape, a record that was a result of a holiday and was definitely not something that came out of chilling at the beach.

My computer died for a 12 hour span. My life crumbled. I am so dependent on this machine to do even the simple things. Thank god I have an iphone otherwise I would have had a complete meltdown. It’s strange but I am moving my whole life towards the laptop. Between the flat hunt, job hunt and entertainment, my life is this hunk of plastic and silicone that is currently warming up my balls.

Anyway, it’s functioning at the moment so I’m pleased. Will try and post more important things this week, other than just random pictures and videos.

I should add right now that the Simian Mobile Disco album is shaping up quite nicely. I suggest that you grab it when it comes out.

Doesn’t Mick look crazy suave in this picture. As If he knows that he is going to smash but she is putting up a front. Oh to be a rolling stone.

Here is the brand new song by Giggs. Produced and featuring Mike Skinner from the Streets it is a moving and powerful track (great unassuming synths, its almost a reconciliation of Blinded by the Lights and the newer stuff). When I first heard Giggs I was all for him but subsequent interviews such as the car crash one on Channel 5’s Basketball show and a phoned in verse on the JME album made me avoid his stuff.

Serves me wrong, he is still talented and can produce a big tune from time to time. Some more career guidance and I think the UK can finally have a talented Street Thug rapper again.

Jazzy Jeff : Return of the Magnificent

In my last post I alluded to their being a lack of great music this summer. So I have had to dig back into the crates, and I picked out Jazzy Jeff’s 2007 release The Return of The Magnificant I have always had a soft spot for Jeff, not in the sense that Will Smith went on to be the biggest star on the planet (Jeff addresses that fact in skits on this LP) but his work with the neo soul movement. He executive produced the first Jill Scott album, which to me (with my leaden M.O.P ears) is still a classic.

Back to the album, there is one song that I automatically fell in love with. It’s Practice and features J-Live. The song itself contains a heavy sample from Tribe Called Quest’s classic Footprints and De La Soul’s Simply Buggin’. That sample is great in itself, put added on top of that are quotes from an infamous rant by Allen Iverson. Iverson, basketball player with the Philly 76’ers (at the time), was peeved that he was fined by his team for missing practice. He then proceeded to call a press conference and utter the word practice 20 times in 2 minutes.

It’s amazing what producers can take and make into a brand new song.

Dungeon Family

The Dungeon family album is a sleeper. Many people dismissed it since it came after the Outkast greatest hits album and the first single featured most of the members in “pimpin” gear. Produced by Organized Noize, the album had diverse feeling. Not just party tracks but introspective songs and it also allowed other artists their time to shine. Bubba Sparks has never sounded as hungry on a track as he does on White Gutz. Of course the first generation Dungeon family members are the key to this album, Outkast and Goodie Mob. How can a team including Killer Mike, Bubba Sparks, Cee-lo (doing singing and rapping duties), Big Boi, Andre 3000, Sleepy Brown and Whitchdoctor be bad? It’s a shame that more people haven’t listened to this album. Since it followed on the heels on Stankonia that people didn’t bother with it, in a summer lacking in great music I suggest you go back and listen.

Simian Mobile Disco : Audacity of Huge Video

Big day here at ldnnez towers, I’m about to make the 7 minute walk to the 02 Festival. On deck later on today are Kanye, Jeezy, Cudi, Example, Ratatat, Calvin Harris and Q-Tip. I’ll write more on why I’m so happy to see Tip later on but right now lets concentrate on the overall concert. I listened to Dizzee’s and Basement Jaxx’s set last night and was impressed with both of them as performers. It is the second time I’ve seen dizzee but I was a virgin for the Jaxx and they didn’t disappoint. Countless world tours and 10 years in the business made them tick like clockwork. Highlights of their show were Wheel and Stop and the extended Dj bits (including Fake Blood’s Mars). Overall it was another great show to add to the month of shows that I’ll be going to.

Anyway here is the video for Simian Mobile Disco’s Audacity of Huge aka the song with the funniest lyrics outside a Soulja Boy song. It features the dude from Yeasayer on vocals. Another huge track from those guys. They are quietly becoming this generations Chemical brothers. Kate Moross and Jo Apps handled the visuals.

Bloc Party : One More Chance Video

I had a discussion with a mate of mine where we talked about the development of Bloc Party. We have both been disappointed with recent output but still retain faith. They are progressing in a fashion similar to Joy Division turning into New Order (minus the death of a band member). This is a band in constant evolution; there will be hits and misses. I’m ambivalent about this new track One More Chance. On the one hand the driving piano beat is something I like but overall it seems slightly underwhelming. Maybe that’s the direction its going for but either way I’m happy to see them back.

5) Daggering, are you a fan of it? I find it pretty amusing. After watching a video of what daggering entails im not surprised guys are getting injured due to daggering. Lets just say i wouldnt be a fan of a guy jumping off a ladder and aiming at my vajayjay.

MSTRKRFT - Heartbreaker (Video)

One of the biggest disappointments of the year was the MSTRKRFT album. After really enjoying the first one with its French house touches, the second one was all Frat-house (read: simplistic) electro party. That unrelenting banging, 100 miles an hour sound. The sound described in the Justice DVD as the new punk rock. I don’t enjoy it, I love Proxy but I can’t stand the others, especially with the proliferation of them on Hype Machine.

Anyway, after MSTRKRFT produced an alluring remix of Green Light (their manipulation of the piano keys was better than the whole original), John Legend returns the favour by singing on Heartbreaker. Unlike the other songs on the album (the Lil Mo ones being the worst) this manages to balance the two worlds of R and B and Electro.

This video reminds me that I need to buy a pinanta.

If You Got The Money - Jamie T Concert 1st July

Well Jamie , I don’t and I didn’t have to pay for tickets. The troubadour from Wimbledon kicked off this year’s Itunes festival with a rousing set. The Itunes festival is unique as you don’t have to pay for tickets, just enter a facebook competition to stand a chance to attend a show.

Jamie T mixed in tracks from the new stick and stones EP with classics from his last album. This was my first time watching him perform and I have to say that I was impressed. With the plethora of live videos online I should have been prepared for his gig. I even spent my Saturday morning watching his set from Glastonbury this past weekend. I obviously wasn’t prepared enough as I stood near the back of the Camden roundhouse watching the swirling mass of teenagers at the front. His fans displayed the energy of a punk crowd, something that offset the fact that they were chanting the depressing subject matters in some of the songs.

The new stuff played well with the crowd but it was the classics that really got people going. Jamie T may never hit the top of the charts but he will be around for a long time. The combination of great songs, lyrics and a great live show (minus any theatrics) will outlive many of his flashy peers.

A little note to be added, if you didn’t win tickets for your favourite act during the festival you can stand in line to have a chance of getting standby tickets. There is a lot of great talent performing this month so don’t miss out because you didn’t win.

Tonight I’m going to see, in my opinion, the best troubadour in the Uk (Who gives a shit about those Libertines losers? Or that dude from Razorlight? Or Richard Blackwood?) Jamie T is a musician that inspired me to move down to London and not be afraid of the big smoke. Along with the Rakes they didn’t paint the city as glorious or too seedy, just what it is. A dilapidated monster of city. Full of transplants and misfits thrown together with the mega rich and the mega poor, I don’t know anyone that isn’t one of the two.

The first track I ever heard was his cover of the Billy Bragg classic “A New England”. These lyrics are timeless.

“I was 21 years when I wrote this song, I’m 22 now but I won’t be for long.

People as when you will grow up to be a man when the girls I loved at school are already pushing prams.

And I loved you then as I loved you still, though I put you on a pedestal they put you on the pill.”

I may not be so keen on the new stuff but he is from the footage I have seen a great performer and I can’t wait. It also marks the start of the ridiculous amount of gigs I am going to this week.

Useless Anyway

I wasn’t going to blog about the Jay-Z shutting down Chris Brown story yesterday since it was pure speculation at that point. And for some reason I like to think that even though this is a blog, facts are still facts. Now that some Vulture has picked up the story I figured I would write about it.

The rumour goes, well through Brown’s back up dancers twitter and his management, that when Jay-Z found out that Chris Brown was performing he threatened he wouldn’t premiere D.O.A after the award show. Now unlike most people I commend Jay Z for this. Too often is this sort of behaviour just accepted as the norm in the entertainment industry. Oh he’s talented, so let’s forget about his other transgressions. Woody Allen is lauded even though he married his daughter. Roman Polanski is another one (sex with a minor).

I am not saying that Chris Brown should not attempt a comeback, he should just fuck off for a while. Do some of his time, 5 years community service and probation, and then release an R Kelly type apology album. I still hope his career flops. He isn’t supremely talented that we should easily forget what he did. Yeah an icon died but using Michael’s death as a promotional tool to get you back in the limelight was odd.

Let’s forget the fact that he is on the tribute song, a song recorded a day after his death. At least Puffy waited some time before raping that Police sample (second only to Vanilla Ice in pure unadulterated beat jacking).

There are those of you who say that everyone should have a chance to show their appreciation. I don’t remember criminals getting let out to celebrate Diana’s life? Sorry that was me descending into hyperbole (this isn’t that sort of blog). I actually thought CB had a chance to make a comeback that was until everyone saw the pictures of what actually took place. And with the internet those pictures will stay around forever. It’s the same reason why Obama isn’t releasing those pictures of the cruelty suffered by the terrorists in Guantanamo. Visually striking is much more impactful than words. The description of what took place that night wasn’t as terrible as those pictures that we saw.

Oh and somewhat related note: 12 people have committed suicide over the deaths of MJ. Remember people he was only human.

Babestation, the Television channel intended for drunk males to whack off to after failing to score in a club, offers up a variety of interesting questions about modern day culture.

1) There is so much porn on the internet why bother with the softcore variety? Also, there is a reason why there are not a lot of UK porn stars; we aren’t that sort of pretty.

2) Who are the girls that get involved in this? My theory is that they are girls that either develop boobs too fast or too late. Devoid of the right sort of sexual attention they become insecure and thus get a boob job. They are pretty enough to be asked to model but not sexy enough for the runway or too old for page 3. So they are offered some arty softcore shots. They like the money and are asked about hardcore shoots. They decline and like the idea that they could get on television, so they decide to become Babestation models. Now they simulate sucking cock on late night tv. “It was just a dream”

3) What do you talk to the girl about if, god forbid, you actually called in? Do you have menial chit chat? “You been watching the tennis?” “Shame about the MP spending?” “Did you know Michael Schumaker was the stig?” I’ve only called a phone sex line that had those pre made stories. (First time she did it, fantasy picnic scenario, and those sorts of things.) I wouldn’t know what to do if I spoke to one of these women. I went to Brighton this weekend. It was adam from acusis 25^th birthday (flicks from that party will be coming soon). Earlier on Saturday I ventured down to the beach and the pier. Somehow it isn’t an English beach without the sunshine. I made my traditional Chris Eubank joke. I avoided the cockles, that’s for the Japanese tourists. Went to Shakeaway (a must visit), I had the snickers and malteser combo.

So I’m back on twatter. I feel like crap but it does mean that I get to keep in touch with Lady Glock (DMV’s premiere tastemaker: word to Chester French). Either way I follow Westwood and his past day of tweets are hilarious.

Now let’s get a few things straight. I like Westwood. Name me any other person that remains relevant to their musical scene at 50? And he was nice when I met him 2 weeks ago and congratulated him on the Tempah T video.

So he has a party tonight at Ministry with Chris Goldfinger. I always wanted to go to these parties as a kid. Westwood is busy promoting it on twitter. Talking about ballers and not buying the house champagne. The funny thing to me is that he just laid it out on the line. Minimum 8k bar spend? Come on it’s a ladies free night at Ministry that’s more than doable but he is going in hard on twitter stressing people not to buy tap water.

Westwood should be knighted already.

The music industry is failing blah blah blah, kids are downloading music on itunes and not the cd blah blah blah bands aren’t getting the chance to release two albums because labels are dropping them blah blah (lily allen) blah).

This is the future of the music industry. Fans will continue to consume music and often will pay for it – just in a different form. This week I was very tempted to buy a cd/tee shirt bundle from Major Lazer ($35 or about £21). Since I knew I was getting two good products, I was tempted to spend more money on music than I normally would in a year (excluding vinyl, that shit will kill me financially).

Mos Def released his new LP last week, it’s available on all formats cd, vinyl and mp3. Oh wait I forgot you can also buy it as a tee shirt. Music fashion company Invisible DJ came up with the idea which is to sell a tee shirt with the download code for the album on the tag. A novel idea and this in turn will force artists to take greater care of their merchandise (cough Jay-Z cough).

Now Mos isn’t the first artist to do this. Ldnnez favourite Esser had his first EP available as a download through his fan club if you bought a tee shirt. A tee shirt is usually 10 pounds which can go pretty much directly to the artist. Fans, especially young ones are more likely to shell out for this type of deal.

It’s summer. Don’t believe me look out the window. You are going to need a song to accompany the fun times ahead. For millions of kids across the world it will be Jeremih’s Birthday Sex. The song is ultimately divisive, most music (R and B especially) purists hate it, others don’t mind, surprisingly I haven’t heard anyone that flat out hates it. Either way the song isn’t fast enough to be enjoyed during the afternoon, it’s a little too slow.

Step in Damage and DJ Venom. Their remix of the track is easily the best one that I have heard. The song is instantly transported from the bedroom to the club, beach or even the park. It’s like its has been merged with all those memories of early 00’s soulful garage, late 90’s euphoric house and today’s UK Funky.

I asked DJ Venom a couple of questions about their remix.

Who are you?

I'm DJ Venom from North London and I make grimey bass music with DJ Damage.

Why Jeremih?

We choose the song because it's fun. And.... most hip hop and R'N'B's between 80-110bpm which means you have to add nasty time-stretching to get it to a danceable bpm. This track's about 60bpm - we could add a double-time 120bpm UK funky beat without any hassle

What other stuff are you working on?

Currently we're working on lots of original material and a few more remixes. I'm a big fan of all the new diva groups like Rich Girl, Electrik Red and Vistoso Bosses. I wanna do some bootlegs soon. We'll have a mixtape out dropping in a few weeks too.

Surprisingly this song doesn’t use autotune, he does that naturally with his voice. What are your thoughts on Autotune?

Autotune has its place but it's a bit tired. All the 90s new jacks and jills didn't use it. I guess that's why that stuff sounds really fresh at the moment.

Earlier in the week, I wrote about the new Jay–Z single which basically calls for the end of the Auto-tune. Whether or not that will be heeded we can only wait to find out (probably not going to work). Either way after listening to the interviews following his Hot 97 Summer Jam appearance (Hip Hop’s biggest yearly event) he seems to be backing off the harshly lyrics in his songs. Chalk this up to another smart marketing move (similar to Nasir Jones Hip Hop is Dead movement). Either way I suddenly remembered this video put up by Atlanta artist B.O.B back in January.

B.O.B ,or Bobby Ray as he now likes to be called, is a rapper/singer from Atlanta. He is often compared to Andre 3000 due to his versatile singing style. He is must more than that he is also a multi instrumentalist and is known for his captivating live shows. He recently did a remix of a stone cold classic (aka a song that can never be fucked with Bonita Applebum by ATCQ) for the Reebok Classics series which was fantastic. I have been getting up to Put Me On for the past week.

He is signed to T.I’s label which is odd since you maybe wouldn’t expect him to be included in a group that featured Alfamega. He is most likely to be the one to break out and achieve his own success ala Lupe Fiasco.

1) Best mixtape of the week :has to be this Clipse one. I have no clue who the Dj Hevehitta is, I think he is Swedish but this mixtape collects some of Malice and Pusha T’s released, unreleased work and the new single (Kinda a Big Deal). It also includes the family favourite Double Down. That song was the soundtrack of my xmas back in 2005 when my bro and I made numerous trips to the Lagos jail. I almost bought a Clipse new era in dc. I didn’t want to endure that wrath of their fans as I can barely rhyme of their songs.

What’s the story behind the Russian Tank in Bermondsey? Legend has it that a property developer bought the land in order to build flats. When the council caught wind of the idea they blocked his proposal. So he then applied to put in a tank. The council agreed thinking it was a septic tank. He then installed a decommissioned Russian tank in the middle of south London. It used to be beautifully painted, like 60’s wallpaper, now it’s pretty sad to see up close. Well that and having to step over the used condoms. Seriously people why are you fucking near a tank by a major street? I guess it could be a decent dogging hotspot. Either way check it out, its on Mandela way by old kent road. Can’t miss it. It’s a fucking pink tank for christ’s sake.
