I'm on you like white on rice

On Thursday night I went to Kissy Sell Out’s album launch party. The event was staged in the Gibson Guitar Centre and drinks where provided by Smirnoff. And now that I got rid of the good bits let’s talk about the actual music.
For those of you who don’t know Kissy Sell Out is a DJ on Radio 1. The Central St Martins graduate made his name by crafting the soundtrack to k induced nights out in east London. His bootlegs made him the next big thing even whilst still at Uni. Still only 23 he has carved out a space for himself in a cluttered genre. His signature style that he brings to remixes (Remi Nicole, Calvin Harris, Human League) is reminiscent of a sugared up kid running up and down those giant piano keys that you only see at harrods or in films.
I was curious to hear about his album since I saw a flyer that said that he will be playing with his band. How would his music translate to a stricter form? Bearing in mind I believe that only a few electronic acts (LCD Soundsystem, Soulwax, Groove Armada) can play well live I was pessimistic. My worst fears were confirmed halfway through the first song. These were nice people playing bland music. I am 76% sure that I would have never heard of this band if they did not have Kissy Sell Out with them.

The album was co-written with his cousin and is about “our childhood growing up in Essex.” So I spent the next 35 minutes listening to songs about chasing women, being paranoid about chasing women and running around and having fun. I forgot to mention that the lyrics aren’t especially good either. Granted songs were broken up by Kissy breaking out a solo on the keytar. Even when they covered EMF’s You’re Unbelievable the crowd virtually didn’t move. It wasn’t until the second to last song when the druggie, ravey massive (12 people you would hate to hang out with) swung their arms wildly in the arms and pogoed their way around the room.

These aren’t the kids that will be buying the album. To be honest I’m not sure who will. My friend who invited me to the release party summed it up “Im pissed off I spent 15 pounds to come to London to see him do that.” If a drunk fan is going to say that then what will the public at large feel?

avoid like the plague.
