"I wanna say a big thank you to all the Chromettes and Funkateers."
Chromeo - Fancy Footwork from Chromeo1 on Vimeo.
Saturday night saw a culmination of a four year love affair. I finally got to see Chromeo play live. And thank god they didn't disappoint. About 2k people saw the montreal boys tear down shepards bush.
I have never met fellow chromeo fans. I have slowly converted a bunch of my friends to their work. One raised the question aren't they a joke band? And to many they are. The funk old school purists frown as they see two guys play 80s funk. A period more recognised for it's outlandish acts and irrisistable songs. The era is marmite. Either you love it or hate it. And if you do like it, you are fearful of any one else making that sort of music in this day and age.
To the elitists i say listen to their mix which is crafted with expertise. Why should hercules and the love affair be allowed to skate by without the same scrutiny placed upon chromeo.
The simple fact is chromeo makes fun pop music. The first album is filled full of instrumental tracks. Although the vocoder is there it's still quite insular. It isnt until your hear needy girl when you can tell that they have the mass appeal. They went away and wrote Fancy Footwork. An album which will stand the test of time.
Fancy Footwork is a monster. Dave1 called it an album to listen to whilst getting ready to go out. And i cant blame him. It fits that situation to a T. This will be the soundtrack to many of my future nights out.
Live, they are fantastic. Stage patter is slick - some yiddish and some gags and a lot of appreciation for their fans. I've seen a lot of concerts this year but only hardcore clipse fans come close to appreciation.
Not bad for a Jew and an Arab from Montreal. I say you give them another chance. Do it now before the future nate dogg collabo blows our minds.
A little bonus: Out of the millions of remixes, here is my favourite one.
