Good morning, well that is what it is. I am stuck on warehouse hours, which means I have to wake up around 6 everyday. It’s five to seven. I just wanted to write a quick note about a few things in my life. Well about two things which are quite parallel. Over the last couple of days I have been listening to a lot of Joy Division and the subsequent group New Order and marvelled at the change in music. The lyrical structure remains relatively the same with melancholy tinged songs about love. However the music is quite diverse at the same time. Although New Order started out quite rocky in their element (see ceremony and age of consent.) ultimately they started experimenting and came up with a more dance beat to their songs. Blue Monday is the biggest selling 12 inch record of all time due to the magnitude of the song but it is Bizarre Love Triangle which has caught my attention. A bit like a deepche mode song which dabbles in romantic tryst and pain with a sweet repetitive beat. Dance music has a disadvantage in terms of lyrics because people often prefer to get lost in the beat and that is why vocal samples are usually kept to a minimum. However New Order and Hot Chip in their footsteps create an interesting dichotomy.
That evolution is similar to the one my friend ibrahim is experiencing. He is going from aspiring lawyer to club promoter. Driven by a distaste of the posturing in the London club scene, he went out and attempted to do it for himself and his friend. It is something that he has poured his heart into and it seems like it will be a success. Give it a go if you are in London but due to work I can’t go. Now if you don’t believe me that you will not have a good time you are completely wrong. Ibrahim taught me to love prince, 70’s funk and Rick James all in a non ironic manner that seems to litter my taste these days. He has also taken me to brazilian samba night where I had one of the best nights of my life. That and he is one of the snappiest dressers that I know. So it you want a good time, suave, savvy people and a good time you should head on down to it.
