Conversations a couple of months ago with Rob lead me to believe that I have a problem. Apart from the sad fact that my record collection is the cleanest thing I own, I do have obsessive compulsive disorder when it comes to my music collection. Now with itunes 7 it’s even worse because I’m looking for the pictures to the corresponding albums and it often gives me headaches because I spend 2 hours looking for a good picture of 2 unlimited. Anyway it was through this conversation that I realised that I love remixes way too much. For the longest time I tried to figure out why I felt this way. I’m still not too sure but I think that it is a reaction to the constant recycling of styles and influences in various forms of media. Music being one of the truest forms of expression is intriguing since people can pick out different styles and play up on it. You can easily pick out themes in movies and television, the emotions or style are easy to pick up on. Art and music it is relatively easy to see who has influenced anyone. Music this is easy to pick up on, especially with the recent spate of bands that just have a certain sound from an era and make those same songs today. Wolfmother, Chromeo and Van She being my favourites. 15% of my Itunes is comprised of remixes the majority of those don’t have some rapper on them. Two of my favourite band have had remix albums (Death From Above 1979 and Bloc Party) neither one is particularly good. In fact I’m pretty sure that the DFA 1979 one was the beginning of the end. How the hell can you go from making one of the best albums of this century to remixing All Saints (Granted the best remix they have done in a while). Argh! Well the point of this little note is to mention that remixing is an art form that isn’t just relegated to music and is pretty refreshing in the world of art as well. Banksy modern updates of classics are another example of remixing breaking through. The question remains what will happen now, will we just have constant rehashing of old favourites. Our culture has become programmed to believe in nostalgia and in many cases buy into it. Cough Beatles Cough. It gets worse and worse as we grow up though. The term back in the day used to relate to period of ten years. Now it can maybe only stretch back only five years. Do you remember the last time I was nostalgic? Im getting nostalgic just thinking about it.
